The Effect of Music Applied in Different Exercise Stages
Abstract:Music plays an important role in any exercise regimen. The prestigious researcher Costas Karageorghis proposed that "When doing exercise, fast-paced music enhances people's endurance and helps them perform better than usual. Exercising with appropriate music can not only relieve the fatigue but also cheer people up." Literature review from our study reveals that music produces different effects during different stages of exercise. Prior to exercise, listening to music leads to better performance in short-term exercise activities. During exercise, it helps increase endurance and exerts influence over low-intermediate intensity activities. After exercise, music improves the recovery rate. Previous studies on the effects of music on exercise were typically conducted in laboratories. Due to related limitations of space and equipment, these failed to keep track of the physical and psychological changes of groups of people at the same time. Future studies can be conducted in the setting of fitness centers, and discuss the influences of various pieces of music on groups of people. This will provide a clearer and more authentic picture of how individuals and small groups react both mentally and physically to exercising in tandem with music. (Full text)
