A Research Framework for Sedentary Behavior Epidemiology
Abstract:Sedentary behavior epidemiology, an important subdomain of modern epidemiology, has been widely utilized for evidence-based interventions. However, only a limited number of studies have engaged in research stages covering sedentary behavior in Taiwan. Given that most of the relevant studies were written in English, this article aims to introduce the sedentary behavior epidemiology framework through a literature review. This framework provides six phases for developing evidence-based sedentary behavior intervention: (1) identifying relationships between sedentary behavior and health outcomes; (2) development of device-based and self-report measurement of sedentary behavior; (3) characterizing population, prevalence, trends and variations in sedentary behaviors; (4) identifying the relevant determinants of sedentary behaviors in multiple contexts; (5) developing and testing interventions to influence sedentary behavior; and (6) using the relevant evidence to inform public health guidelines and policy. We hope this review will improve researchers' understanding of the sedentary behavior epidemiology framework, which in turn will guide the implementation of policies designed to reduce sedentary behavior and to prevent disease in Taiwan.
